چکیده

In semiarid environments of the Mediterranean region, intercropping is a sustainable agricultural system long standing. this area, pea (Pisum sativum L.) one most commonly grown legume crops. Little information available on quality silages to be obtained from forage mixtures intercropped with cereals or annual grasses. study, two experiments were conducted over course growing seasons in Sicily (Italy) aim determine biomass production crop and assess, only second experiment, silage grass legumes. Four species pure stand mixture pea, their main agronomic traits determined. The land equivalent ratio (LER), competitive ratio, aggressivity index also calculated. A number parameters considered assess fermented biomasses derived pea–ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. var. Westerwoldicum) intercropping. first best performance between intercrops was recorded for pea–wheat mixture. total LER calculated fodder yields always greater than 1, indicating yield advantages ranging 2.0% 47.0%. appeared respond well, depending plant arrangement seeding factors: ratios 50:50 100:50 showed greatest advantages, 12.0% 11.0%, respectively. All revealed very good suitability high-quality Southern region.

ewline"> Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is an oilseed species, which in southern Italy iscultivated as annual during the spring-summer period under irrigation, but in mosttemperate areas such as those of eastern coast of Sicily, it could be grown as semiperennial with no irrigation, by the adoption of autumnal sowings. A fieldexperiment was conducted in southeastern Sicily with the aim of assessi...

Silage from tropical cereals and forage crops

The preservation of forages by ensiling has been a well known technology for many years and is popular in North America and Europe. This technology requires high investment in facilities, accurate timing in the several stages of the ensiling process, and better understanding of the whole process than hay making demands. In addition to these demands, silage making and management in tropical cond...

Forage Quality and the Environment

The influence of environmental factors on forage quality of temperate and tropical grasses has been reviewed by several authors, who summarized how light, temperature, drought and soil nutrients influence chemical composition, and digestibility of forages grown in contrasting areas of the world. The effects of season of the year on forage growth, grazing behavior and animal performance have als...

Alfalfa Silage Versus Red Clover Silage or a Mixture of Alfalfa and Red Clover Silage as the Sole Forage for Lactating Dairy Cows

Introduction The large proportion of CP in alfalfa silage (AS) that is present as NPN substantially reduces the efficiency of protein utilization by lactating dairy cows (Nagel and Broderick, 1992). Red clover silage (RCS) typically has a much lower content of NPN than AS (Albrecht and Muck, 1991). In a previous feeding study (Broderick and Sterrenburg, 1996 USDFRC Res. Sum.), we found that DMI...
